Goodlife Toronto Half Marathon

Fortunately, my hip was feeling MUCH better today so it didn't affect my race at all. I really wasn't hoping for anything other than finishing in under 2:30 again (and I missed it by 38 seconds) given that I ran 10K yesterday, so I was pretty pleased with my race. I did the first half in a little over an hour so I was on target but things sort of fell apart near the end of the race.

Overall, it was a good race (anything that's mostly downhill is good in my books). The start area could have been a bit more organized - supposedly there were corrals but I didn't see them. But the volunteers were great, there were more than enough water stations and port-a-potties and the food at the finish line was really good. I loved the fact that they had shuttle buses running from Yonge and Eglinton so I didn't have to worry about transportation.

My next one is the Angus Glen 10K the first weekend in November. And then Vegas!!!

Oasis Zoo Run 10K

Ok, so not exactly my best time ever, but in the circumstances, not too bad.

First of all, after signing up for the Zoo Run, I decided I wanted to do the Goodlife Toronto Half Marathon (which just happens to take place the next day). So I ended up signed up for a 10K one day and a half marathon the next. I really wanted to do the Zoo Run so I decided I'd run it but just take it really slow and easy.

Then I managed to fall 2 days before the run and give myself a giant bruise on my hip. It hurt to even walk so when I started the race, I wasn't sure I'd even be able to finish. Luckily, as I ran, the pain subsided and I was able to continue.

Needless to say, I wasn't trying for any particular time so I'm content with the result.

It was a beautiful run - about 4 degrees when we started, sunny and there were lots of animals out waiting for us to come by. The tigers were having breakfast as we ran by and the zebras were out roaming around. I thought it was especially appropriate to have the evil dholes at about the 9K mark just to keep me moving (Mel, they looked cute again so I think you did something to them that one time).

Overall a great run! More later on the half marathon (once they manage to get the results online!!).

It's been a while!

Gosh, I haven't posted in over a month! Part of the reason for that is that I was away in Europe for 2 weeks (and went running a grand total of 2 times).

I've been "sort of" back into the training since. I've been doing my long runs but skipping some of the shorter ones.

I have a 10K race on Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday (not sure how that happened but I'm determined to do them both).

More importantly, I am officially registered for my first ever (and maybe only ever) full marathon! I'm doing the Mississauga Marathon in May 2010 and am very excited about it. I honestly don't know that I ever want to do a second one, mainly because of the insane amount of training involved, but I really want to do one.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Great run!

I had the best run ever yesterday! It was about 17 degrees when I went out and didn't warm up too much. I did just under 10K and it felt FANTASTIC! I felt as good at the 9K mark as I did at 1K... I don't have too many runs like that.

We're leaving for Europe tonight for 2 weeks... my plan is to run at least every other day. I know I'm not going to completely stick to my training program but I don't want to completely mess it up either.

Speaking of my training program, I'm doing the Las Vegas Half in December, so that's what I'm currently training for. I'd like to do it in 2:15 (my fastest is 2:26) and I'm following the Running Room program to get ready for it.

In other news, I've now decided I want to do at least one full marathon so I'm going to sign up for the Mississauga Marathon next May. Yippee!!

Toronto Women's 5K

Yay for fall!

Ok, so maybe it's not fall just yet and maybe I would prefer a little more summer...

BUT, I love this temperature for running!! It was about 20 degrees today when I was out and it was so nice not being covered in sweat after 50 metres!

I picked up my race kit today for the Toronto Women's 5K this Saturday. The only complaint I have is about the size of the t-shirt. I ordered a medium and it's TINY!!! I guess maybe most runners don't have the boobs that I do but this shirt looks like it's made for a 12-year old!

I've been really good this week about getting out for my training runs. I'm thinking I'd like to do the Las Vegas 1/2 in 2:15 so I'm training for that.

I think that's it for now...

Island Girl 10K

Can you say HOT?!

The temperature was somewhere around 28 degrees when we started and only went up from there. My pace was way slower than usual, as I had to walk significantly more often than usual. Thank heavens for water stations - I hardly drank anything, just poured it all over my head!

Temperature aside, what a great race! For a first-time event, this race was amazingly well-organized and a lot of fun. The course was great, as was the start/finish area. There were just over 300 women running, which meant there was no lineup for post-a-potties and very little delay or bunching at the start. I'll definitely do this race again next year, although I'm hoping the weather will cooperate and be a little cooler!

Injuries

Since I've started running, I really haven't had anything in the way of an injury, which I guess I should be thankful for, given the numbers of races I've done in such a short time. I seem to have developed my first one now though.

I've been having a lot of pain in the heel of my left foot and I've diagnosed myself with plantar fasciitis, based on the symptoms I've read everywhere. I have pain when I take my first few steps in the morning and then it gets better. It hurts when I start running but goes away after half a km or so. But in the last week or so, it's been getting worse. It was ok during my race yesterday but afterward, it was really painful! I iced it all evening and took an Advil and had my husband massage it for me but it was still hurting. Today, it's better but is still pretty sore.

I searched the runnersworld.com site and have managed to come up with some things that should help. There are stretches I can do in the morning that are supposed to help and I've also ordered a night splint, which a lot of people said helped them in as little as a few days. Hopefully it gets here soon! I actually really wanted to go running today but I'm going to give it at least one more day before venturing out again (for a short run!!).

I hope this goes away quickly... I don't want to have to take a break from running or anything!

Acura Toronto 10 Miler

This was one of my favorite races I've ever run! It started in the Distillery District, which is beautiful itself but the route then goes down by the water and out along the Leslie Street Spit, where I've never run before. It didn't feel like I was running in the city at all... there was water everywhere, and trees and greenery and ducks!
I was pleased with my time... it was only my second ten miler and I improved on my time by about 5 minutes so I really couldn't ask for anything more.
This one will definitely be a repeat!!

Running

Hey everyone! Not much new and exciting here but I haven't posted anything in a while so I thought I'd drop in. I haven't had a race in over a month so I guess I haven't had much to post about for a while!

I'm doing the Acura 10 miler this coming Sunday. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and it won't be too hot. I've been out training in the warmer weather so hopefully I'll be ready even if it's warm.

I'm actually finally starting to not mind TOO much running in the heat, although I would much prefer the cooler weather.

I'll let everyone know how Sunday goes!

Runway Run and Wine Country Run

Neither of these was one of my better races... I had to stop and safety pin my skirt to my t-shirt at the Runway Run or it would have been around my ankles. The Wine Run was a lot of fun but oh my goodness, it was hilly!! And hot! I'll do it again next year but will plan to walk 90% of it.

This past weekend was City Chase. It was so much more fun than last year, despite Mel's knee issues. We were so much better organized and did so much better!

This weekend

I have 2 very cool races this weekend!

Saturday is the Runway Run. You won't be surprised to hear that it's at the airport, on an actual runway. They did it last year but it was the same day as City Chase so I missed it but this year it's the week before so I'm very excited!

Then on Sunday, I have the Wine Country Run. All of the water stations are at wineries and you can taste wine at the stations as well. Talk about my kind of run!! In all seriousness, I suspect there won't be much tasting going on until afterward (I imagine drinking wine and running don't go real well together) but it still should be fun.

Then next weekend is City Chase. Mel and I are going to kick some serious butt this year!

Running and smokers

Ok, so here is my rant for the day (and I know that some of my friends and fellow runners are smokers, so I hope no one is offended).

I seriously wish there was a "smoker free" running route. There's nothing worse than being in the middle of a run and feeling really good and suddenly running past someone who blows out a big cloud of smoke just as you go by.

I get that smokers have the right to be out there too, so this isn't a rant about banning smoking or anything. It's just a rant about my having to breathe in 10 lungfuls of smoke this afternoon!!

That's all.

Blue Nose Half Marathon

Gosh! I completely forgot to post an update after the Blue Nose race!!

I set a new PB for myself, as did Mel!! I finally finished one in under 2:30... 2:26:13 to be exact. It wasn't the best weather... kind of drizzly but the temperature was great and at least the real rain stayed away!

I don't have any more long races lined up for a while... a ten miler in July but otherwise just 5 and 10K's until December, when I'm doing the Las Vegas Half.

I have a 5K tomorrow - the Toronto Women's 5K. It's the first year for this even so it should be fun. It's actually called the Toronto Women's Half Marathon but I figured 2 halfs 2 weeks apart might not be the smartest thing to do so I just signed up for the 5K. I'm hoping to finish under 30 minutes which would be a new PB for me at this distance.

Wish me luck!!

Sporting Life 10K

So, I didn't quite break my 60 minute mark. But my Garmin showed that the race was actually 10.46km so I probably did do the 10km in 60 minutes. Regardless, it was a new PB, so I was thrilled with my time!

It was a great race.... nice temp, nice weather.

Looking to break 60 minutes!

The Sporting Life 10K is this Sunday and I'm hoping to break 60 minutes. My fastest to date is 1:04 so it's a fair amount of time to cut off but I'm counting on the downhill course to speed me up.

I did the Mercedes Benz 10K last Sunday and had half a thought that I'd try and break the 60 minutes that day but by the time I was a km into the race, I knew that wasn't going to happen. I finished in 1:07 which I was pretty happy with. I didn't win the car though...

Oh my goodness, this race was hilly!!! There were a couple of doozies that I could hardly walk up, let alone run! (I'm sure the fact that I've now run 60 kilometres since last Sunday may have had something to do with that too).

Overall, it was an ok race. The hills really were brutal and I ended up walking more than I normally would have needed to but it was a bautiful day for a race and Angus Glen does such a great job of hosting these things that I'll probably be back next year.

Harry's Spring Runoff 8K

No official time for this one... I got there too late to pick up my timing chip so I ran it without one. It was a pretty good race... a little windy and cold but overall a decent race. I never thought I'd say this but 8K was EASY! Considering the fact that my last 3 races have been 21km, 21, km and 30km, I guess it's not surprising that 8K wasn't too much of a challenge...

ATB 30K

Today was my longest race to date – 30K. I did the 5K version of the Around the Bay last year but decided to go for it and do the full 30K this year.

I haven’t been training nearly as much as I should have been so I was a little scared about this race – the longest I’ve even run at one time prior to today was 24K so doing a full 25% more was a bit of a concern. I have to admit that it was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done but I made it through and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be.

The temperature was perfect (about 4 degrees when we started) but it was raining (pouring, actually, at one point) so that was kind of miserable. It stopped by about the halfway point so at least that was a good thing.

I was doing great up until about the 22-23 km point and that’s where the real hills started. I struggled a bit up until the last km and then really pushed myself.

Since I’ve never done this distance before, my real goal was to finish in under 4 hours without having to call a taxi to get me there and I did it!

Now I just have to decide whether I want to take the next step and do a full marathon or not….

Chilly Half Marathon

Today, I ran my second Half Marathon – the Burlington Chilly Half Marathon. And the race lived up to its name – CHILLY!

It was -15 overnight, so when the race was starting at around 10:00am, it was probably around -11, plus there was a windchill. I stayed huddled in the hotel until there was about 10 minutes to go, then ventured out with an extra scarf tied around my face to protect it from the wind. And, of course, as I was heading toward the start line, there was a guy dressed in shorts! I actually saw a few people wearing shorts over the course of the race and seriously questioned their sanity.

I, on the other hand, was fully prepared in my winter tights, long sleeved shirt, sweater and windproof jacket (and gloves, earmuffs and scarf). It wasn’t too cold waiting for the race to start… lots of bodies huddled close together.

We started right at 10:05 (not sure why 10:05 for the start time…) and within 10 minutes, I was nice and toasty. My scarf has a new home on a tree somewhere on New Street – I’m sure some homeless person will appreciate it.

I was really hoping to finish this race in under 2:30. I was only over that in Miami by less than 2 minutes and I figured the conditions were perfect for a new PB – flat, cool, I was feeling good… Things were going great for the first 14km. I hit the halfway mark in 1:13 after not really pushing myself that hard and was planning to continue coasting till about the 16 km mark and then really push it.

Unfortunately, at around the 14km mark, I developed a cramp in the muscle on the outside of my left leg (I believe that would be my glute, but could be wrong). I tried every stretch possible (well, except for the one I should have done) to get rid of it but nothing was working. I was able to continue running, but I stopped 3 separate times to stretch, plus I had to walk way more frequently than I otherwise would have. My pace for the last third of the race was pathetic.

Anyway, I finished in just under 2:35 which, considering the fact that I wanted to stop and sit down at about 19km, isn’t bad. I guess I just wasn’t meant to get under 2:30 today. I’m not sure what I did wrong. I probably didn’t drink as much water yesterday as I should have, so that may have been the problem, or maybe I didn’t drink enough on the course. Regardless, it’s done… on to the next.

The next HM is the Blue Nose in Halifax in May. I’m not even going to try for a PB there, as the course is somewhat hilly. My next big race is the Around the Bay 30K at the end of March. At least there I’m guaranteed a PB since I’ve never done it before!

Getting closer to my 2nd half!

Only 5 days to go till the Chilly Half!

I did 10km today, and felt REALLY good, so I think I should be in decent shape for the race. I'd love to beat my time from Miami but with the lack of training I've been doing that may not be realistic, but oh well.... not the end of the world!

Another couple of photos from Miami

I have resigned myself to the fact that...

I'm just not going to be as prepared as I should be for next weekend. I got out Monday and ran a whole 4.5 km (and was miserable the entire way), then didn't run till yesterday. I did 7 km yesterday and it was actually a really good run so at least I know that I haven't completely un-done all my hard work!

No running today... too cold and windy. My plan is to get out Sunday for 6, then 10 Tuesday, 6 Wednesday and 4 Friday. We'll see if I actually manage to do them all.

Sunday, February 15, 2009

So much for that

My last post, that is. Since those 14K I've been sitting on my behind and doing nothing. I had a terrible weekend in terms of eating and feel like I've gained 10 pounds.

I am going to FORCE myself to get out and do my long run (18-20 km) tomorrow. The Chilly Half is only 2 weeks away so I should be starting to taper, but the fact is, I've been tapering for the past 2 weeks... not good...

Why am I feeling so unmotivated these days????

Sunday, February 8, 2009

My second half marathon!

Is coming up in exactly 3 weeks!

I slacked off a bit with the running this past week, as the weather was pretty yucky, plus I was away for 2 days, but got back to it today and did my 14 km I was supposed to do. It was actually pretty nice for running - around 0 degrees and sunny - but the sidewalks were a bit slippery, which is never a good thing.

I plan to get in ALL of my training runs for the next few weeks, in the hopes of shaving that minute and 39 seconds off my time!

Monday, February 2, 2009

First real run since Miami

Other than our pathetic (1 mile) attempt to run on the cruise, I haven't been out at all since the half marathon. I got out and did 11km today and it felt really good. The temperature was above freezing for a change so that was nice... the sidewalks were in pretty icky condition... slushy/icy in some places and 6 inches of water in others, but it was still a good run, despite the wet cold feet.

I have my Chilly Half Marathom coming up on March 1st, so I'm trying to basically continue my training without taking too much of a break or a reduction in mileage. I'm cutting back a bit on my shorter runs, as I don't want to end up with an injury but I'm trying to keep up the distance with the long ones.

It's supposed to be ok weather tomorrow but then Wednesday is supposed to be a high of -13. Yuck! I think Wednesday might be my day off for this week!

Mel and I before the race - aren't we pink???

Miami Half Marathon

I can now say I'm officially a Half Marathoner! What an amazing race!
We started out before dawn (had to be in the corrals by 5:55) but neither of us could sleep anyway so getting up wasn't a big deal. There were 15,500 people running so it was a bit of a zoo near the start line, although it was very well-organized. The atmosphere was great - everyone was excited to be there. The temperature was also perfect - about 13 degrees.
The race started at 6:15 but because of the number of people, it was almost 6:30 before we even reached the start line. The first part of the course was incredible, running across the bridge beside the cruise ships. Because it was so early, it was still dark but the ships were all lit up and looked so pretty! The support along the course was good too - there was a police boat in the water along beside us, sounding its siren at everyone. There were 3 helicoptors hovering above us as we ran across the bridge. Really neat!

Running along Ocean Drive was fun - all kinds of little cafes and restaurants, with people sitting outside cheering us on.

At about the 18km mark, I was starting to get really tired. I knew I'd be able to finish but my pace was starting to slow down and I felt like I needed more frequent walk breaks. Luckily, it was also at about that point when there started to be more people lining the course and cheering us on so that motivated me to keep moving.

I finished in 2:31:39. I had been hoping for 2:30 but since it was my first one, I was happy just to have finished it.

All in all, it was a great race and one I wouldn't mind doing again some year.

3 days and counting

I'm now less than 72 hours from starting (and finishing) my first half marathon and less than 24 hours from leaving for Miami. Everything is packed except for the last minute stuff and I'm ready to go!

The weather in Miami is still looking good for the race - lots of sun and not too hot.

Getting really excited now!

Less than 24 hours till I'm off to Miami

Yep, only 21 hours to go till I'll be well on my way to Miami. I'm so excited about this trip! Not only do I get to run my first half marathon ever, but I get to spend a week somewhere warm, go on a cruise, and spend a week with Mel! What more could I ask for?

So... about the race. I'm ready. It's funny... when I started training, my goal was just to complete it. They (whoever "they" are) say that that should be your goal for your first one. But then I hit the point where I realized there was no question that I could complete it. I ran 20K in a training run and made it without much trouble so I know I can do 21.1. So now my goal is to complete it in 2:30. That might be a bit optimistic and if I don't make it, I won't beat myself up but I needed some sort of challenge for myself.

We've signed up for the 5K race on Saturday as well. We're supposed to run 3K that day anyway and when we found out the 5K'ers get a medal, we decided we had to do it! We're not going to race it, just treat it as a slow run.

Anyway, my suitcases are calling my name (actually, I think it's a cat IN the suitcase that's calling) so I'd better get packing.

Sick

I've been bad the last couple of days and haven't been running. I started coming down with a cold on Friday and it hit me with full force yesterday. I could have gone running, even with the cold, but then I took cold medication which make me so dopey, I would have been dangerous on a treadmill!!

Today I'm feeling a little better but I just couldn't make myself get out there.

I'll get back to it tomorrow and do the 6K I was supposed to do today, then do my scheduled runs Tuesday and Wednesday. At least I'll only have missed one day.

So... a week from now, I'll have completed my first half marathon!!! I'm getting so excited!!!

Treadmill is growing on me

My run today wasn't as bad... still boring but I think I'm starting to get used to the treadmill. Tomorrow's a day off, thank heavens!

I'm happy to report that I still have all my toenails and none are hurting, unlike somebody I know... :-)

We leave a week from tomorrow... yay!

Hateful hateful thing!

The treadmill, that is. I did 6K on it today and even with my iPod it was horrible! I should be able to run faster on the TM than outside like most normal people do but I'm WAY slower! It took me almost an hour to do 6km!!

Tomorrow is another 6... yuck! It's supposed to be even colder tomorrow too, so there's no chance of doing it outside.

The good news is that I only have 5 more runs till Miami... yay!

I hate treadmills!

I did my 8km today on the treadmill at the gym. That was partly because it was snowing and yucky and -20 outside and partly because I figure I should try to get my body used to running in warmer weather before I head to Miami.

Can you say BORING???? I forgot my iPod so I was using the headphones from my Blackberry and had them plugged into the TV but the gym really doesn't have a wide variety of channels. It was a choice of Cable Pulse News or soap operas that I don't watch. How exciting. So I watched the news but they kept repeating the top stories so by 20 minutes in, I was hearing for the third time about how cold it was outside.

I'm going to make sure to remember my iPod tomorrow... it still won't be as good as running outside but at least I'll have my music.

12 days to go!!

Less than 3 weeks to go!

And I actually think I'm going to be ready. I did 19km on the weekend and managed to do it in less than 2.5 hours and I really wasn't pushing myself (just running at my usual pace!).

I just have to make myself totally keep up with my training for the next 20 days... I'm aiming to get in every single one of my runs and every single km I'm supposed to run in those next 20 days.

I had a crappy run today... I did just under the 6km I was supposed to do but it was really hard. Tomorrow is only 4, which is good, but the next day is 8, so if tomorrow is going well, I might just keep going and do the 8 and save 4 for the next day.

The good news - only 1 long run left before the race!!! Yay!
